San Diego, CA (March 6, 2026) – A fire sparked by an overheated lithium-ion battery damaged a student dormitory at San Diego State University’s Tenochca Hall late on Tuesday night, March 3.
Firefighters were called just after 10:50 p.m. to the fourth floor of the eight-story building at 6126 Montezuma Road. Students evacuated safely while crews quickly extinguished the blaze. Officials reported that 16 rooms sustained water damage from the building’s sprinklers.
Two students suffering from smoke inhalation and one with a minor burn were evaluated and treated at the scene. The campus arranged alternative housing for displaced students. Fire officials confirmed the fire originated from an electric scooter battery that overheated.
The incident remains under review.
We are glad no serious injuries occurred, and hope the affected students recover quickly.
Lithium-Ion Battery Fires in Dorms and Homes
Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are increasingly common, often originating from devices such as e-bikes, scooters, and laptops. These batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if damaged or improperly charged.
To reduce risk, experts recommend purchasing products certified by recognized safety labs, using the manufacturer-supplied charging cords, and following instructions carefully. Sprinkler systems and quick evacuation are critical in minimizing injury and property damage, as these fires can reignite even after initial extinguishment.
