How Wrong-Way Crashes Happen on Major Highways
Interstate 55 is considered a major highway; roads like this are designed with divided traffic to keep vehicles moving safely in opposite directions. When a vehicle enters the roadway in the wrong direction, the risk of a severe crash rises quickly.
Wrong-way incidents may occur when drivers mistakenly enter exit ramps or become confused by road layouts. Reduced visibility during nighttime hours can also contribute to these situations.
Head-on collisions are especially dangerous on highways because vehicles often travel at higher speeds. When two vehicles meet in opposing lanes, the force of the impact can lead to significant damage and life-threatening injuries.
