Springfield, IL (March 9, 2026) – Two people died, and another person was injured after a wrong-way crash early Monday morning in Springfield. The accident happened around 1 a.m. on Interstate 55 southbound near milepost 87.5 by East Lake Shore Drive.
Emergency units responded to the scene and found two vehicles that had collided on the southbound side of the interstate. According to early reports, one of the vehicles had been traveling northbound in the southbound lanes before the crash occurred.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. One driver was identified as a 42-year-old woman from Wentzville, Missouri, and the other as a 51-year-old woman from Girard, Illinois.
A passenger in one of the vehicles was hurt and taken to a nearby hospital. Officials have not released details about the person’s condition.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 55 were closed for several hours while crews worked at the scene. Traffic resumed shortly after 6 a.m.
