Grant County, IN (March 11, 2026) – One man died, and two others were injured in a crash early on Tuesday morning, March 10, on Interstate 69 in Grant County.
Emergency units responded around 6:33 a.m. to the northbound lanes of Interstate 69 near mile marker 272 after multiple reports of a flipped vehicle and people being ejected from a crash. Responders arrived to find two pickup trucks involved, including a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and a 1996 Chevrolet truck.
Authorities said Joseph Kidwell of Marion was among those injured in the crash. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that Kidwell and his wife were standing near their disabled truck on the side of the highway while waiting for family assistance; the Silverado attempted to pass a semi-truck and veered off the road while changing lanes, striking the disabled truck.
Two other people injured in the crash were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, and authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Highway Shoulder Risks During Vehicle Breakdowns
Transitional zones between highways and surface streets near Interstate 69 can increase crash risk. Crews in Grant County often manage merging traffic carefully when accidents occur along these corridors.
Vehicles stopped along highway shoulders may be exposed to passing traffic traveling at high speeds. When drivers change lanes or attempt to pass other vehicles, even a small steering error can cause a vehicle to leave the roadway.
Breakdowns can create dangerous conditions if drivers or passengers stand outside their vehicles near active lanes. Limited reaction time for approaching drivers may increase the likelihood of a serious crash when vehicles are stopped close to the roadway.
