Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur on Residential Streets
Pedestrian accidents are not limited to major highways or busy intersections. Many crashes occur on residential streets where drivers and pedestrians share narrower roadways and visibility can be limited.
Parked cars, driveways, and trees along neighborhood streets can make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing the road. Pedestrians may also step into the street from between parked vehicles, leaving little time for a driver to react.
Speed can also influence the severity of injuries in these situations. Even at moderate speeds, a vehicle striking a person can cause significant harm.
Communities often install crosswalks, speed calming measures, and improved lighting to help reduce pedestrian crashes in residential areas. These features can help make neighborhood streets safer for both drivers and people walking.
