Byron, IL (March 12, 2026) – Three workers were exposed to a chemical on Thursday morning, March 12, at the Byron Clean Energy Center in Ogle County. The facility is located at 4450 North German Church Road in Byron.
According to reports, the workers were exposed to hydrazine during operations at the nuclear power plant. Hydrazine is commonly used in power generation systems to reduce corrosion inside boilers and steam equipment.
The incident happened just two days after another chemical exposure inside the plant on Tuesday, March 10. During that earlier event, several workers were evaluated at hospitals after a small amount of a non-radiological chemical leaked from a holding tank inside the turbine building.
Company representatives said the earlier leak was quickly contained and did not pose a threat to nearby communities. The facility remained operational following both incidents.
