Johnson Co., KS (March 12, 2026) – Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon, March 11, on Interstate 35 in Johnson County.
Emergency units responded around 2:55 p.m. to the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near milepost 230, about 100 feet south of Antioch Road. Authorities reported that three vehicles were involved in the crash while traffic was slowing in the left lane.
Investigators said a 2010 BMW 328i moved from the right to the left lane and accelerated to pass another vehicle. The BMW struck a 2013 Toyota Highlander that had slowed for traffic, causing the Highlander to collide with a 2015 Ford F-150 ahead of it.
All three vehicles came to rest in the left lane following the chain reaction crash. The drivers of each vehicle were injured and taken to area hospitals for treatment.
The injured drivers were identified as 27-year-old Carlos Fuentes Capote of Lenexa, Kansas; 73-year-old Sunhui Fouts of Kansas City, Missouri; and 64-year-old Mills Clark of Kansas City, Kansas. Their injuries were described as suspected minor.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash. We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
How Chain-Reaction Crashes Develop in Slowing Highway Traffic
Busy highway corridors like Interstate 35 often experience sudden changes in traffic speed. When incidents occur in Johnson County, responders typically focus on securing the lane and assisting drivers involved in the crash.
Chain-reaction crashes can occur when one vehicle strikes another that has slowed or stopped for traffic. The initial impact may push the struck vehicle forward, leading to additional collisions with vehicles ahead.
Lane changes and attempts to pass slower traffic can increase the risk of these types of crashes. When vehicles move into a lane where traffic is already slowing, drivers may have little time to react before a collision occurs.
