Waterville, ME (March 12, 2026) – A Maine man was seriously injured after a crash along Interstate 95 in Waterville that investigators say may have involved impairment.
According to Maine State Police, the collision occurred around 5:40 a.m. when a vehicle driven by a 41-year-old man from Brunswick was merging onto the northbound lanes of I-95 from the on-ramp near mile marker 130. As the driver entered the interstate, his vehicle struck another vehicle already on the highway.
Authorities said the driver then lost control and crashed head-on into a guardrail. The impact left him trapped inside the vehicle, prompting a response from emergency crews.
Rescuers worked for approximately 30 minutes to free the man from the wreckage. He was later transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said impairment is believed to be a likely factor in the crash. No additional information about the other driver or possible injuries has been released. The incident remains under investigation.
Why On-Ramp Merging Crashes Can Be Dangerous
Crashes that occur while vehicles merge onto highways can be especially dangerous because drivers must quickly match the speed of traffic already moving at highway speeds.
If a driver misjudges timing, speed, or available space, the result can be a sudden collision or loss of vehicle control. These situations may also become more hazardous if a driver is impaired or distracted.
Guardrails along highways are designed to absorb some of the force during a crash and prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway. However, impacts with these barriers can still cause serious injuries, especially at higher speeds.
Law enforcement officials often remind drivers to use extra caution while merging onto busy interstates and to remain alert for vehicles entering the roadway from ramps.
