Why Vehicles Sometimes Leave the Road on Rural Highways
Single-vehicle crashes on rural highways often happen when a driver loses control or drifts off the roadway. These roads can include narrow shoulders, ditches, or culverts close to the pavement, which can increase the severity of a crash once a vehicle leaves the lane.
Early morning hours can also create additional challenges. Reduced visibility, fatigue, or unexpected obstacles may cause a vehicle to leave the roadway. When a truck is towing a trailer or other unit, the added weight and movement can affect stability if the vehicle suddenly changes direction.
Roadway design may also influence how these incidents unfold. Curves, uneven shoulders, or roadside drainage structures such as culverts can increase damage once a vehicle departs the lane. These factors are often reviewed after rural roadway accidents to help determine the cause of the incident.
