Shannon County, MO (March 15, 2026) – A motorcyclist from Winona lost his life Sunday morning after a crash involving an ambulance on Highway 19 in Shannon County.

The collision happened around 8:35 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, about six miles south of Winona. According to reports, an 18-year-old man was riding a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle northbound on Hwy 19.

Authorities said the motorcycle struck a 2023 Ford ambulance that was traveling southbound and attempting to make a left turn. The impact occurred as the ambulance entered the turn.

The young rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The ambulance driver, a 32-year-old man from West Plains, was not hurt in the crash.

Officials said both drivers were using safety devices at the time of the collision. No additional information has been released about the circumstances leading up to the crash.

The incident remains under review by authorities. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Why Motorcycle Crashes Can Occur at Turning Intersections

Motorcycle accidents frequently occur when another vehicle turns across the rider’s path. Because motorcycles are smaller than most vehicles, they can sometimes be harder for drivers to judge in terms of speed and distance.

Left-turn situations are a common factor in these incidents. When a vehicle turns across an oncoming lane, the driver must quickly estimate the distance and speed of an approaching motorcycle.

Motorcycles also respond differently to sudden changes on the road. Riders have less protection than occupants of larger vehicles, which can increase the risk of severe outcomes during a collision.

Traffic conditions, visibility, and driver awareness may all influence how these crashes unfold. Reviewing roadway layout, vehicle movement, and timing can help provide a clearer picture of what happened in intersection-related motorcycle accidents.
