Gainesville, FL (March 18, 2026) – A collision between a passenger car and a bicycle brought emergency units to the intersection of SE 13th Road and South Main Street in Gainesville on Wednesday, March 18.

The crash was reported in the early afternoon. Fire and EMS units responded to the scene to assist the person hurt in the collision.

The bicyclist suffered a broken arm, according to initial reports. No other injuries were confirmed at this time.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.

What Are the Common Risks Bicyclists Face at Florida Intersections?

Intersections are among the most dangerous spots for bicyclists across Florida. When a car and a bike meet at a crossing, the size and speed difference between the two puts the rider at a much greater risk of injury, even in lower-speed collisions. Upper-body injuries like broken bones are among the more common outcomes when a rider is struck or thrown from their bike.

Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of bicycle-involved crashes each year. Urban areas with mixed traffic — where cars, bikes, and foot traffic share the same space — tend to see more of these incidents than residential streets or dedicated bike paths. Road conditions, sight lines, and driver awareness all factor into how these crashes happen and how serious the outcome can be.
