Georgetown, DE (March 19, 2026) – A woman and two children were injured following a two-vehicle crash along Sussex Highway in Georgetown.
The collision occurred around 8:05 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, near the intersection of Sussex Highway and Airport Road. Emergency units responded to the scene after reports of a crash involving an Audi SQ7 and a Hyundai Accent.
According to preliminary reports, the Audi was traveling southbound in the left lane of Sussex Highway as it approached Airport Road. At the same time, the Hyundai was stopped at a yield sign in the crossover, preparing to travel west across the highway.
Investigators say the Audi left the southbound lane and entered the center median before the vehicle’s front right struck the Hyundai’s passenger side. The impact caused injuries to occupants inside the Hyundai.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 26-year-old woman from Georgetown, and a 3-year-old child were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. An 8-year-old child from Georgetown was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Audi, a 38-year-old man from Staten Island, New York, was not hurt in the crash. Authorities later cited him for inattentive driving. The roadway was closed for an extended time while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Crossover Areas on Highways Can Lead to Vehicle Crashes
Crossover sections on divided highways allow vehicles to move from one direction of travel to another or cross multiple lanes. These areas require drivers to carefully judge traffic from both directions before entering the roadway.
Because traffic on highways often moves at higher speeds, drivers may have only a short time to react when another vehicle enters or crosses the lanes. Even a small misjudgment in timing or distance can lead to a collision.
Vehicles traveling through crossovers may also be positioned in medians or waiting areas while preparing to cross. Drivers approaching these sections must remain alert for vehicles that may suddenly move into the roadway.
Traffic flow, visibility, and driver attention can all affect the safety of vehicle passage through these areas. When one driver fails to maintain proper lane control or awareness, the risk of a crash can increase significantly.
