Why Intersections Often See Serious Multi-Vehicle Crashes

Busy intersections are common sites of serious traffic accidents because vehicles approach from multiple directions simultaneously. When traffic signals, turning movements, and high speeds combine, the chances of a crash can increase quickly.

Crashes at intersections may involve more than two vehicles. When one vehicle collides with another, the impact force can push vehicles into adjacent lanes or into other cars waiting to proceed. This can create a chain of impacts in a short amount of time.

Large vehicles, such as trucks and trailers, can also increase the severity of a collision. Their size and weight can cause greater damage to smaller vehicles in an accident.

Traffic congestion, sudden stops, and limited reaction time can all contribute to serious crashes at intersections, particularly during busy afternoon hours.
