Why Roadside Work Along Highways Can Be Dangerous
Drivers who stop along the side of a busy highway face significant risks from passing traffic. Even when vehicles are parked on the shoulder, high speeds and limited reaction time can create hazardous conditions.
Tow truck operators, maintenance workers, and stranded drivers often work only a few feet from moving traffic. If another driver drifts out of their lane or fails to slow down, the results can be severe.
Highways such as interstate routes often carry heavy traffic throughout the day. Vehicles traveling at highway speeds require longer distances to slow or stop, which can make sudden maneuvers difficult.
Staying alert, reducing speed near stopped vehicles, and moving over when possible can help reduce the risk of roadside crashes. These precautions give roadside workers and drivers more space while they handle mechanical problems or other emergencies.
