Why Motorcycle Crashes at Intersections Can Be Severe
Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than many other vehicles on the road. Because of this, collisions between motorcycles and passenger vehicles often occur near intersections where drivers are turning or crossing traffic.
When a vehicle turns across a lane of travel, the driver may not immediately notice an approaching motorcycle. Limited visibility, traffic congestion, and quick movements can make it difficult to judge distance and speed.
Motorcyclists also face greater physical risk during collisions. Unlike occupants of cars or trucks, riders are not protected by a vehicle frame or safety systems such as airbags.
These factors can make intersection crashes especially dangerous for riders. Even at moderate speeds, the impact between a motorcycle and another vehicle can result in severe injuries.
