Why Do Vehicles Cross Into Oncoming Traffic?
Crashes involving vehicles entering the opposite lane often happen due to driver error or loss of control. This may be caused by distraction, fatigue, or a medical issue. Even a brief moment of inattention can lead to a serious situation.
Road conditions can also play a part. Wet pavement, debris, or uneven surfaces may cause a vehicle to drift or slide across the center line. Larger vehicles, such as trucks, may be harder to control during sudden movements.
Lane departure can also occur if a driver misjudges space or speed. Staying focused, maintaining a safe speed, and keeping both hands on the wheel can help reduce the risk of crossing into oncoming traffic.
