Traverse City, MI (March 23, 2026) – A tragic accident at Cherry Capital Airport on Friday afternoon, March 20, claimed the life of a minor as they were struck by a shuttle bus while walking from the parking lot to the terminal. The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m.
Authorities confirmed the child was a Michigan resident, though not from Traverse City. Emergency personnel, including on-duty and off-duty paramedics and a trauma doctor, responded immediately, but the minor was pronounced dead at the scene. The shuttle involved is operated by Metropolis, the company contracted to manage airport parking and provide transportation to and from the economy lot.
The Cherry Capital Airport Police Department is leading the investigation into the crash. At this time, additional details about how the accident occurred have not been released.
Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the child during this difficult time.
Why Airport Pedestrian Accidents Can Be Particularly Dangerous
Pedestrian accidents at airports are often severe due to the mix of vehicles and pedestrians and the limited space in high-traffic areas. Shuttle buses may move quickly between parking areas and terminals, and pedestrians crossing to reach these services can be at risk if visibility is limited.
Even experienced drivers may have difficulty stopping suddenly, and the combination of crowds, luggage, and vehicle movement increases the potential for accidents. Airports emphasize designated crosswalks, clear signage, and alert driving to reduce these risks, though tragedies can still occur.
