How Wrong-Way Driving Can Lead to Severe Crashes
Wrong-way driving incidents occur when a vehicle travels against the normal direction of traffic. These situations often happen on major roads or highways where drivers mistakenly enter from the wrong ramp or lane.
Because vehicles are moving toward each other rather than in the same direction, crashes involving wrong-way drivers can occur at higher combined speeds. This can greatly increase the force of impact.
Drivers may also have little time to react when they encounter a vehicle traveling toward them in the wrong lane. Even a brief delay in recognizing the danger can make it difficult to avoid a collision.
Roadway signs, lighting, and lane markings are often designed to help prevent wrong-way travel, but confusion, poor visibility, or driver error can still lead to these dangerous situations.
