How Urban Intersections Can Increase Crash Risk
Busy city intersections often see a mix of turning vehicles, through traffic, and nearby pedestrian activity. This combination can create sudden stops and unexpected movements, especially during nighttime hours when visibility may be reduced.
Traffic signals and lane changes can also contribute to confusion if drivers misjudge timing or speed. In areas like neighborhood corridors, drivers may encounter both local and pass-through traffic, which can increase the chance of collisions.
When a crash occurs in these settings, road closures are sometimes necessary to allow safe cleanup and restore normal traffic flow. Even smaller crashes can disrupt traffic for extended periods due to the limited space available in urban environments.
