Why do jackknife crashes involving tractor-trailers happen?
Jackknife accidents occur when a tractor-trailer’s trailer swings out to form an angle with the cab, often due to sudden braking or loss of traction. These incidents can be especially dangerous because they may block multiple lanes of traffic and involve other vehicles.
Factors such as wet or slippery road conditions, excessive speed, or abrupt maneuvers can increase the risk of a jackknife. When large trucks lose control, the size and weight of the vehicle can lead to severe damage and serious injuries.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution around large trucks, maintain safe following distances, and be mindful of changing road conditions to help reduce the risk of these dangerous crashes.
