Columbia, MO (April 3, 2026) – Injuries were reported following a three-vehicle crash that caused lane closures during Friday evening traffic in Columbia.
The accident occurred around 5:47 p.m. on Friday, April 3, along eastbound I-70 near mile marker 122, close to the Sorrels Overpass. Emergency units responded to the scene, where one of the vehicles had overturned and was blocking the roadway.
Officials confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the crash and that injuries were reported, though the number of people hurt and the severity of their injuries have not been released. One of the drivers was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
The eastbound lanes were temporarily closed as crews worked at the scene, causing traffic delays that extended to the Midway exit. Traffic in the westbound lanes was also slowed before conditions improved later in the evening.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Rollover Crashes Impact Traffic on Highways
Rollover crashes can significantly affect traffic flow, especially on busy highways during peak travel times. When a vehicle overturns, it may block one or more lanes, forcing traffic to slow or stop entirely.
These types of crashes can happen due to sudden steering, collisions with other vehicles, or loss of control. The position of the overturned vehicle often determines how much of the roadway is affected and how long closures may last.
Traffic congestion can quickly build when lanes are blocked, sometimes extending for miles. Delays may also affect nearby lanes as drivers slow to pass the scene.
