Why Pedestrian Safety Is Critical on City Streets
Pedestrian crashes often result in serious or fatal injuries because people are unprotected compared to vehicle occupants. Crossing roads outside of designated crosswalks or against signals increases the risk of being struck, even when drivers attempt to avoid collisions.
Urban streets with multiple lanes, stopped traffic, or high vehicle volumes can create dangerous situations for pedestrians. Drivers must remain alert, and pedestrians are encouraged to use crosswalks and wait for traffic signals to reduce risk. Even split-second misjudgments can lead to severe consequences, underscoring the need for caution on both sides of the road.
