San Jose, CA (April 22, 2026) – A 1-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon, April 21, after being struck by a vehicle in the parking area of an apartment complex on the 2100 block of Canoas Garden Avenue.

Emergency units responded to the scene around 4:23 p.m. following reports of a pedestrian crash. According to early findings, the child, identified as Olivier Carmelo Sgarlata, was walking in the parking area when he was hit by a man driving a minivan.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital but did not survive his injuries. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities stated that alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.

Why Parking Area Crashes Can Be Dangerous for Young Children

Parking areas in residential complexes often have a mix of moving vehicles and pedestrians in close spaces. Drivers may be focused on parking or exiting, which can limit their ability to see nearby small children.

Young kids are especially at risk because of their height and unpredictable movement. They may be difficult to spot, particularly behind or beside larger vehicles like vans or SUVs.

Low speeds in parking areas do not always prevent serious outcomes. Limited visibility, tight spaces, and frequent vehicle movement can increase the chance of a crash. Features such as clear markings, speed control measures, and careful driving can help reduce these risks.
