What Risks Do Motorcyclists Face on New Mexico Interstates at Night?
Riding a motorcycle on a busy interstate after dark carries risks that differ significantly from daytime travel. Reduced visibility makes it harder for other drivers to spot motorcycles, particularly at highway speeds where reaction times are already limited. In New Mexico, where open stretches of freeway can encourage higher speeds, the consequences of a nighttime collision are often severe.
Motorcycles offer little physical protection compared to enclosed vehicles, and at interstate speeds, even a single-vehicle crash can be fatal. The I-25 corridor near Albuquerque sees heavy traffic throughout the evening hours, mixing commuters, commercial trucks, and travelers heading north and south through the region. Lane changes, merging vehicles, and road debris are among the hazards that become harder to detect and avoid after dark on a high-speed roadway.
