Somerville, MA (April 23, 2026) – Two firefighters were hurt Thursday morning, April 23, after a fire broke out inside a vacant warehouse on Columbia St.
Emergency units were called to 480 Columbia St at about 5:45 a.m. after reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from the basement. Crews arrived to find the fire spreading within the lower level of the building, which had previously been used as an auto parts and salvage facility.
During the response, one firefighter suffered a minor facial injury and was treated at the scene before returning to assist with fire suppression. Both injuries were described as minor. Crews worked for more than two hours to bring the fire under control, with operations wrapping up around 8 a.m.
Additional support units responded to assist at the scene as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The building was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.
How Fire Conditions in Vacant Buildings Can Increase Risk
Fires in vacant buildings can be harder to control due to a lack of maintenance and hidden hazards. These structures often have weakened floors, blocked exits, or stored debris that can fuel flames and trap heat.
Basement fires can be especially dangerous because heat and smoke rise quickly through the building. This can limit visibility and make it harder for crews to locate the source. Poor ventilation may also cause smoke to build up faster than in occupied spaces.
Older buildings, like former warehouses, may contain flammable materials or outdated layouts that complicate response efforts. Even when no one is inside, these conditions can increase risks for emergency crews working to contain the fire.
