Cass County, NE (April 25, 2026) – Two people were injured in a crash involving a semi-truck that jackknifed Tuesday morning, April 23, at the intersection of Highway 34 and Highway 50 in Cass County.
Deputies responded to the scene around 11:19 a.m. and found a collision between a 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer and a 2019 Toyota Highlander. According to investigators, the semi-truck was traveling southbound on Highway 50 while the SUV was heading eastbound on Highway 34 when the two vehicles collided within the intersection.
The impact caused the trailer to jackknife and come to rest in a ditch south of the intersection. The SUV remained in the southbound lanes of Highway 50.
Both drivers were trapped and required extrication. The SUV driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, while the semi-truck driver suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance.
Authorities confirmed that both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
Why Jackknife Accidents Involving Semi-Trucks Can Be So Dangerous
Jackknife accidents occur when a trailer swings out from behind a truck, forming an angle that can block multiple lanes or leave the roadway entirely. These incidents are often triggered by sudden braking, slippery road conditions, or collisions.
Intersections can be particularly hazardous for large commercial vehicles due to turning angles, traffic flow, and the need to slow or stop quickly. When a smaller vehicle collides with a semi-truck, the size and weight difference can lead to more severe outcomes.
Proper following distances, cautious driving near intersections, and awareness of large truck blind spots can help reduce the risk of these dangerous crashes.
