What Risks Do Cyclists Face in Same-Direction Traffic Crashes?
Crashes involving bicyclists and vehicles traveling in the same direction can lead to especially serious injuries because cyclists have little physical protection during an impact. These accidents may occur when drivers fail to notice a rider ahead, particularly during nighttime hours or in areas with limited lighting.
Investigators often review roadway visibility, traffic speed, lane width, and the location of the cyclist at the time of the collision. Vehicle stopping distance and driver reaction time can also provide insight into how the crash developed. In severe bicycle accidents, the force of impact may throw the rider into traffic lanes or underneath a vehicle, increasing the risk of fatal injuries. Damage patterns, roadway evidence, and witness accounts are commonly examined to help reconstruct the sequence of events.
