What Happens When Major Freeway Lanes Are Closed After a Crash?
When a serious crash occurs on a freeway, lane closures are often implemented to protect those at the scene and allow emergency work to proceed safely. These closures can affect traffic flow for several hours, especially during busy travel times.
Limited lane access can lead to congestion and delays as vehicles are forced to merge into fewer open lanes. This may increase the risk of secondary crashes if drivers are not alert or fail to adjust their speed.
Freeway incidents often require time to clear damaged vehicles and debris. Crews may also assess road conditions before reopening all lanes to ensure it is safe for traffic to resume.
