Kansas City, MO (April 29, 2026) – A police vehicle rolled over and struck multiple stopped cars after a driver failed to yield to an emergency vehicle on Monday, April 28, at the intersection of Bannister Rd and Blue Ridge Blvd in Kansas City.
The marked police Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on Bannister Rd with lights and sirens active just before 11:30 a.m. As it entered the intersection, a black Chevrolet Traverse failed to yield and hit the police vehicle on the passenger side. The force of the impact caused the police vehicle to roll over and slide into several westbound vehicles that were stopped at the intersection.
The officer inside the police vehicle and two occupants of the Chevrolet were taken to area hospitals with what appeared to be minor injuries. The officer’s name was not released.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of the officer and the others hurt as they recover.
What Missouri Law Requires When Emergency Vehicles Approach an Intersection
Missouri’s move-over and yield laws require drivers to give the right of way to emergency vehicles displaying lights and sirens. When a police car, ambulance, or fire truck approaches an intersection with its emergency equipment active, other drivers are legally required to slow down, stop if needed, and clear a path. Failing to yield in these situations is a traffic violation that can carry serious consequences, especially when a crash results.
Intersection collisions involving emergency vehicles are particularly dangerous because the responding vehicle is often moving at speed while other traffic may not react in time. In Kansas City, as elsewhere in Missouri, these incidents are treated seriously and are subject to full crash investigation. The size and weight of modern SUVs and police vehicles mean that even lower-speed impacts can cause significant damage and injury.
