What Makes Pedestrians on Highways Especially Vulnerable?
Pedestrians on highways face extreme danger due to high vehicle speeds and limited driver reaction time. Unlike city streets, highways are not designed for foot traffic, and drivers do not expect to encounter people walking along or across lanes.
When a pedestrian enters a highway, especially in low-light conditions like early morning hours, visibility can be significantly reduced. Even attentive drivers may not have enough time or distance to avoid a collision.
Additionally, large vehicles such as semi-trucks require longer stopping distances, further increasing the danger in these situations. For safety, pedestrians should avoid highways whenever possible and seek designated crossings or safer routes.
