Why Work Zone Pedestrian Incidents Often Result in Severe Injuries
Incidents involving road workers often occur in active traffic environments where vehicles and construction activity share limited space. Even when warning signs or cones are present, driver distraction or reduced reaction time can increase risk.
In many cases, workers operate close to live traffic lanes, which leaves little margin for error if a vehicle drifts or fails to slow down. The severity of injuries is often higher due to the lack of physical protection.
Speed, visibility, and roadway layout all play a role in these types of incidents. Early morning conditions can also affect driver awareness due to changing light and traffic patterns.
Work zones require heightened attention from drivers, as conditions may change quickly and personnel may be positioned close to moving vehicles.
