Montgomery, IL (May 1, 2026) – Two individuals were injured Thursday afternoon following a fire at a Walmart store in Montgomery.
According to Oswego fire officials, the fire broke out shortly before 1:00 p.m. on the roof of the store. Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and worked to contain the blaze before it could spread further into the building.
During the incident, one person suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene before being released. A second individual was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of an unrelated injury.
Firefighters were able to keep the flames largely confined to the roof area, though smoke and water from suppression efforts impacted parts of the store’s interior. Authorities have not released further details about the identities of those injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
We hope for a full recovery for those affected.
How Does Smoke Inhalation Impact Victims in Fire Incidents?
Smoke inhalation is one of the most common injuries during fires and can be more dangerous than burns in some cases. Breathing in smoke exposes individuals to harmful gases and fine particles that can irritate the lungs and reduce oxygen levels in the body.
Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness, and confusion. In more serious cases, smoke inhalation can lead to respiratory complications that require hospitalization and ongoing care.
Even when symptoms appear mild, medical evaluation is important, as complications can develop hours after exposure. Quick response from emergency crews and timely treatment can significantly improve outcomes for those affected.
