What Risks Do Parked Tow Trucks Face Along Roadways?
Tow trucks and roadside assistance vehicles often operate in hazardous conditions, especially when stopped along active roadways. Even when positioned on the shoulder, these vehicles remain close to passing traffic, creating a risk for both operators and approaching drivers.
Crashes involving parked tow trucks can happen when drivers fail to notice them in time, particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced. Distractions, fatigue, or failure to slow down can all contribute to these types of collisions. Additionally, the presence of disabled vehicles or ongoing loading operations can create unexpected obstacles that drivers must navigate carefully.
Many states have “Move Over” laws requiring drivers to slow down or change lanes when approaching emergency or service vehicles. Following these laws and staying alert can significantly reduce the risk of crashes and help protect those working on the roadside.
