How Stop Sign Violations Can Lead to Serious Intersection Crashes
Crashes at stop-controlled intersections usually occur when a driver fails to come to a complete stop or rolls through a sign without fully yielding. This can place a vehicle directly into the path of cross traffic that may be moving at higher speeds, leaving little to no time for reaction.
Large vehicles like semi-trucks require significantly more time and distance to slow down or stop due to their size and weight. When a smaller vehicle enters their path unexpectedly, the force of impact can be devastating, and the size disparity between the two vehicles means that occupants of the smaller vehicle bear the most severe consequences.
Intersection visibility, driver attention, and familiarity with the roadway all influence how safely vehicles pass through these areas. Obstructed sightlines caused by vegetation, parked vehicles, or poor signage can make it difficult for drivers to assess oncoming traffic in time. Even a brief lapse in attention can result in a collision with life-altering or fatal consequences.
