Saco, ME (May 2, 2026) – A Biddeford man died on Friday morning, May 1, following a head-on motorcycle crash involving an SUV on U.S. Route 1 in Saco.
The collision happened just before 7 a.m. when 52-year-old Michael Petersen was riding a gray Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Route 1. According to the police, Petersen attempted to pass a tractor-trailer that was making a right turn.
Officials said the motorcycle crossed the double yellow center lines and collided head-on with a southbound red Chevy Equinox. Emergency units responded to the scene and transported both drivers to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Petersen was later pronounced dead at the hospital, while the driver of the SUV, a 53-year-old Saco resident, suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Petersen.
Why Passing Maneuvers Near Turning Vehicles Can Become Dangerous
Motorcycle crashes involving passing maneuvers can become especially serious when visibility is limited by larger vehicles such as tractor-trailers. When a rider attempts to pass near an intersection or a turning vehicle, oncoming traffic may be hidden until the last moment.
Crossing double yellow lines on two-lane highways increases the risk of head-on collisions, which are among the most severe types of roadway crashes. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable because they have far less protection than occupants inside passenger vehicles.
Investigators often examine roadway markings, vehicle positions, and sightlines after these crashes. These details help determine how the collision occurred and whether traffic movements or road conditions contributed to the incident.
