Fresno Co., CA (September 6, 2026) – A pedestrian was injured in a collision involving a vehicle near the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp at Panoche Road at about 4:57 p.m. on Friday, September 4. The interchange is in unincorporated Fresno County, southwest of Mendota.
The initial CHP report said a caller’s brother had been struck by a car and was on the roadside. A white sedan was identified as the involved vehicle. The call was classified as a hit-and-run with injuries. Authorities continue investigating the crash.

Freeway Ramp Areas Combine Pedestrian and Vehicle Hazards
Interstate ramps are designed mainly for motor traffic, and drivers may be focused on merging, exiting, or adjusting speed. A pedestrian near the roadside can therefore be harder to notice, especially where ramp traffic meets a local road.

People on foot have little protection from a moving vehicle. Travel speed, lighting, shoulder width, visibility, and the point of contact can all affect injury severity. Wider separation from active lanes and careful scanning can reduce conflicts where local roads connect with freeway ramps.
