Frequently Asked Questions
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. Once one vehicle stops or slows on a highway, trailing traffic usually has little time to react, which can lead to a second or third impact before the scene is secured.
What makes multi-vehicle crashes hard to investigate?
Investigators have to determine the order of impacts and how fast each vehicle was moving when it struck another, which usually requires reviewing vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and witness accounts separately for each collision.
What causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
Common factors include following too closely, sudden braking, reduced visibility, and heavy traffic volume, though the specific cause in any one crash is determined only after investigators review the evidence.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Alcoa, TN
If you're involved in a chain-reaction crash, stay in your vehicle if it's unsafe to get out, turn on hazard lights, and call 911 right away so responders can manage traffic around the scene. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since injuries from being struck from behind or thrown forward aren't always obvious right away. Take photos if it's safe to do so, get contact information from anyone else involved, and file a report with local police. Alcoa drivers dealing with the aftermath of a crash should also keep copies of any medical paperwork and repair estimates in case they're needed later.
