MUSKEGON, Ottawa County, Mich., Oct. 3, 2026 — A 34-year-old Allendale man died on Friday evening, October 2, after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Lake Michigan Drive and 78th Avenue. A second man was hospitalized, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies and Allendale Township Fire Department crews were sent to the intersection around 5:33 p.m. A preliminary investigation found the 34-year-old had been driving south on 78th Avenue and pulled out in front of a westbound vehicle on Lake Michigan Drive, driven by a 55-year-old Zeeland man, when the two cars collided.

The Allendale man's injuries were fatal, investigators said. The Zeeland man was also hurt and was taken to a nearby hospital by LIFE Ambulance. His condition has not been released. The crash remains under investigation. The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information to come forward.

We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk in Intersection Crashes

Crashes at rural intersections like this one usually involve a vehicle pulling out from a side road into a faster-moving through lane. Drivers making that turn, especially from a stop sign onto a state highway or county road, carry much of the risk because they must judge gaps in traffic moving at higher speeds than their own.

Research on intersection crashes consistently shows that the driver pulling out or turning across traffic is more likely to be seriously hurt or killed than the driver with the right of way, since the impact usually strikes the side of the entering vehicle. Rural intersections without signals add to that exposure because vehicles reach higher speeds before drivers have to react.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person was killed every 13 minutes in traffic crashes in 2023. Intersection crashes remain a steady share of that toll, particularly where a stop-controlled road meets a higher-speed route.

Timelines vary widely depending on the complexity of the crash and whether toxicology or mechanical testing is needed. Straightforward cases may close within a few weeks, while others take months.

What role does impairment play in fatal crashes?

Impairment from alcohol, drugs, or fatigue is a factor investigators routinely check for, though it is not confirmed in every case. Toxicology results, when ordered, can take time to come back.
