Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to stop and increase the force of impact, which raises the risk of serious injury or death. Even modest reductions in speed can improve a pedestrian's odds significantly.
Where do most pedestrian collisions happen?
Many occur on roadways without sidewalks or marked crossings, including shoulders of highways, where pedestrians and vehicles share space with little separation.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Low light conditions make it harder for drivers to see people walking or standing near the road, and a large share of pedestrian collisions happen at night or during periods of reduced visibility.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle?
Seek medical attention right away, even if injuries seem minor, and report the incident to law enforcement so an official record is created.
