ALMADEN VALLEY, Santa Clara County, Calif., Oct. 1, 2026 — A motorcyclist was injured on Tuesday afternoon, September 29, in a crash involving a car near Country View Drive and McKean Road.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash was first reported as a collision with unknown injuries before being upgraded to a report of an injury crash with the rider down in the roadway. The collision was located near 22700 McKean Road in the Almaden Valley area of San Jose.

A motorcycle and a passenger car were involved. The rider was transported to a local trauma center for treatment, and San Jose police were notified of the transport. The extent of the rider's injuries has not been released.

Santa Clara County park rangers and fire personnel responded to the scene, along with emergency medical crews. Both vehicles involved were towed from the scene once the investigation on scene concluded. No further details on the cause of the crash have been released.

The crash remains under investigation. No additional information on citations or fault has been made public.

We wish those injured a full recovery.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk When Motorcycles and Cars Collide

Riders carry almost all the physical risk when a motorcycle and a car collide. A car's frame and airbags absorb crash energy before it reaches the people inside. A motorcyclist has no such shell, so the same impact that leaves a car's occupants with minor injuries can throw a rider from the bike and onto pavement or another vehicle.

Federal crash data has long shown that per mile traveled, motorcyclists die at a far higher rate than occupants of passenger vehicles. Riders without helmets, riders on unfamiliar roads, and riders hit by a car turning across their path at an intersection make up a large share of serious injury cases nationwide.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, motorcycle fatalities decreased from 649 in 2022 to 583 in 2023. That drop suggests gear, rider training, and roadway design can change outcomes even though motorcyclists remain more exposed than drivers or passengers in any crash they're part of.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the road surface matter for motorcycle safety?

Yes. Loose gravel, wet pavement, potholes, and painted lane markings can all reduce a motorcycle's traction in ways that barely affect a car. Riders have far less margin to correct a skid because the bike relies on two narrow contact patches instead of four tires.

What gear actually reduces injury in a motorcycle crash?

A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots are consistently linked to fewer head, hand, and lower-leg injuries in crash studies. Helmets in particular reduce the risk of fatal head injury substantially.

What usually causes motorcycle crashes involving another vehicle?

Common factors include a driver failing to see an oncoming or merging motorcycle, left turns made across a rider's path, and following distances that don't leave enough room to react. Speed and road conditions also play a role.

Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than car crashes?

Riders lack the structural protection of a vehicle cabin, so the same crash forces that a car absorbs with its frame and airbags are instead transferred directly to the rider's body.

What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Almaden Valley, CA

If you're involved in a motorcycle crash, move to a safe location if you're able and call 911 right away. Even injuries that feel minor at first, like road rash or a jolted shoulder, can mask deeper soft-tissue or head trauma, so it's worth getting checked by medical personnel at the scene or at a hospital afterward.

Exchange information with the other driver if possible, and try to note details like the time, location, and direction of travel while they're fresh. If police respond, ask how to obtain a copy of the report once it's filed. Giving yourself time to rest and following up with a doctor in the days after a crash can make a real difference in recovery, even when nothing seems broken at first.
