AMARILLO, Potter County, Texas, Nov. 6, 2026 — A woman died, and another pedestrian was hospitalized after a crash on Wednesday night, November 4, near Amarillo High School, according to the Amarillo Police Department.
Officers were sent to the area of Granada Dr and Bell St at about 8 p.m. after a pedestrian crash was reported in front of the school. Investigators said the pedestrians were crossing the street outside a designated crosswalk when a vehicle struck them.
One woman died at the scene. A second pedestrian was hurt in a separate collision while reportedly trying to help and was taken to a local hospital. Her condition has not been released.
As of about 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, investigators had not identified the woman who died. The department's Traffic Investigation Unit, which is handling the probe, flew a drone over the scene to map the crash. The agency said her identity has not yet been released.
A police sergeant with the Traffic Investigation Unit urged pedestrians to take extra care now that the end of daylight saving time means darker evenings, and said wearing light-colored or reflective clothing can help drivers see people on foot after dark.
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival? Pedestrians struck at higher speeds face a much greater risk of severe or fatal injury; even modest reductions in speed can improve survival odds.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen? Many occur away from marked crosswalks or intersections, usually where visibility is limited, or lighting is poor.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night? Yes. Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people crossing, especially outside lit crossing areas.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle? Call 911 immediately, stay as still as possible until help arrives, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor.
