Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In most states, including Iowa, pedestrians have the right of way once they have entered a marked or unmarked crosswalk, and drivers are required to stop or yield. That right of way does not remove a pedestrian's duty to use reasonable caution before stepping into traffic.
How can drivers reduce the chance of hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down near intersections, scanning both sides of the road before turning, and avoiding distractions like phones give drivers more time to spot and react to someone crossing, especially in low light.
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles usually suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since they have no protection against the impact. The severity usually depends on the vehicle's speed and where the person is struck.
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Common factors include driver distraction, failing to yield at crosswalks, poor visibility at night or in bad weather, and speeding. Investigators typically look at all of these when reconstructing a crash.
