ARCADIA, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 1, 2026 — Two separate crashes tangled traffic on westbound Interstate 210 near Huntington Drive early Wednesday morning, September 30, according to the California Highway Patrol. At least one person was reported injured and transported to a hospital, the agency said.

The chain of collisions began before 6 a.m. in the westbound fast lane, where a black Honda Civic reportedly collided with a dark green SUV, blocking the lane. Within minutes, additional vehicles became involved, with CHP logs describing a gray sedan striking three more cars and a separate report naming a black Nissan Altima and a black Chevrolet Cruze among the vehicles involved. By the time units arrived, dispatch logs show as many as six vehicles affected across the roadway, with some blocking lanes and described as not moveable.

One motorist, driving a dark gray Toyota RAV4, requested medical help and was reported injured, prompting paramedics to respond and later transport that person to a hospital, CHP radio traffic indicated. A second person, in a dark green Hyundai Tucson, was also noted on scene by CHP as an involved party. It remains unclear whether anyone else was hurt.

CHP initially logged the incident as two separate collisions before updating its classification to reflect the broader pileup, with fire crews and tow operators dispatched to clear wreckage from the roadway. A rotation tow company was called to the scene to remove disabled vehicles.

The investigation is ongoing. We wish the injured a swift and full recovery.

When Multi-Vehicle Pileups Are Most Likely to Happen

Chain-reaction crashes involving several vehicles tend to cluster in the early morning hours, particularly before sunrise during the fall and winter months when darkness overlaps with the start of the morning commute. Visibility drops, headlights create glare, and drivers merging onto freeways have less time to react to slowed or stopped traffic ahead.

Fatigue plays a role too. Early morning drivers, including commercial operators and commuters starting long shifts, are more likely to have slower reaction times. Combined with higher speeds typical of freeway travel, a single lane blockage can quickly draw in trailing vehicles before they have a chance to brake or change lanes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 365 large-truck occupants were killed in multi-vehicle crashes involving large trucks in 2023. The data reflects how quickly an initial collision can escalate once following vehicles are unable to stop in time, particularly where visibility or traffic density complicates reaction time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?

Turn on hazard lights, stay inside the vehicle if it's safe to do so, and move as far from traffic lanes as possible. If you must exit, do so only on the shoulder side and get behind a barrier if one is available.

How does fog or low visibility contribute to pile-ups?

Reduced visibility shortens the distance drivers have to spot stopped or slowed traffic, often leading to a chain of rear-end impacts as following vehicles arrive at a scene faster than they can safely react.

Why is following distance so important?

Greater following distance gives drivers more time to brake if traffic ahead slows suddenly, which is often the deciding factor in whether a vehicle avoids an existing collision or adds to it.

Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?

Yes. Vehicles slowing or stopping near an earlier crash create a hazard for drivers approaching from behind, especially in low light or heavy traffic, which is part of why responders work quickly to clear lanes and warn oncoming vehicles.
