ATCHISON, Atchison County, Kan., Oct. 13, 2026 — Two people were taken to a hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon, October 11, at an intersection in Atchison, according to police.
The crash happened just after noon at Kearney Street and 7th Street, Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson said. A 2020 Toyota Camry heading east on Kearney St reportedly entered the intersection and collided with a 2005 Toyota Echo traveling north on 7th Street.
The Camry's driver, a 30-year-old Atchison man, was examined at the scene by EMS crews and was expected to seek further treatment on his own. He was cited for failure to yield.
The Echo's driver, a 63-year-old Atchison woman, and a 33-year-old passenger in her car were both taken by ambulance to Amberwell Hospital for evaluation. Their conditions have not been released.
Wilson's department is handling the investigation. No further details have been made public.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
A Common Misconception About Intersection Crashes
Many drivers assume that right of way is something they can claim just by arriving at an intersection first, or by having a green light. In practice, right of way is something one driver yields to another, and it only works if both drivers see each other and react in time. A driver with the legal right of way can still be involved in a crash if another vehicle fails to stop or yield.
Another assumption is that these crashes are rare compared to highway wrecks involving higher speeds. That is not well supported by the broader crash record. Intersections are where paths cross constantly, often at reduced speed but with little time to react once a vehicle enters unexpectedly.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 23,959 passenger-vehicle occupants were killed in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. That figure includes crashes at many speeds and types, a reminder that severity is a function not only of how fast vehicles are moving but also of angle, timing, and whether occupants are using safety restraints.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does weather or road conditions play a role in intersection crashes?
Rain, ice, glare, or poor visibility can affect a driver's ability to judge gaps in traffic or stop in time, which can contribute to a failure to yield even when a driver did not intend to run a stop sign or signal.
What should someone do immediately after a car accident?
Check for injuries, call 911, move to a safe location if possible, and exchange information with the other driver. Photograph the vehicles and the intersection, then wait for the police to arrive and document the scene.
Where do most traffic accidents happen?
A large share of crashes occur at or near intersections, where vehicles traveling in different directions cross paths, often within city limits rather than on open highways.
How can drivers lower the chance of this type of crash?
Coming to a full stop at posted signs, checking cross traffic twice before entering an intersection, and never assuming another driver sees you are basic habits that help.
