Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes between large vehicles like semis and farm equipment?
Rear-end collisions involving semis and slow-moving farm machinery often come down to speed differences, limited reaction time and reduced visibility on rural highways. Investigators look at following distance, speed and road conditions in these cases.
Why are speed and following distance so important on rural highways?
Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react to slow-moving vehicles ahead, including tractors and other farm equipment. Even a few extra car lengths of following distance can make the difference between stopping safely and a collision.
How dangerous is distracted driving around slow-moving vehicles?
Looking away from the road for even a few seconds can be enough to miss a slow-moving tractor or stopped vehicle ahead, especially on highways where speed limits are high and reaction windows are short.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Audubon, IA
If you witness or are involved in a crash involving a tractor or other farm equipment, call 911 immediately and try to move to a safe location away from traffic if possible. Do not approach damaged vehicles unless it's safe to do so. Even if injuries seem minor, get checked by a medical professional, since some injuries from a collision don't show symptoms right away. Cooperate with responding officers and provide a clear, honest account of what you saw. If you're a farmer or equipment operator, make sure slow-moving vehicle emblems and lighting are visible and working before heading onto a highway.
