How are fatal crashes investigated?
Police typically document the scene, interview witnesses, and in hit-and-run cases work to identify the vehicle involved. Crashes involving a death are usually handled by a specialized unit, such as a vehicular homicide team.
How long do these investigations usually take?
Timelines vary. Initial findings can come within days, but full investigations, especially those involving a fleeing driver or pending charges, can take weeks or months before conclusions are released.
What role does impairment play in fatal crashes?
Alcohol or drug impairment is a factor in some fatal crashes, but it is only confirmed once an agency states so based on testing or an arrest, such as an intoxication-related charge.
Where do fatal pedestrian crashes usually happen?
They frequently occur on higher-speed roads and highways, especially after dark, when visibility is lower and traffic moves faster.
