What Factors Can Affect Pedestrian Safety at Intersections?
Pedestrian crashes often occur at intersections where vehicles and pedestrians meet. Visibility can be reduced by parked cars, poor lighting, or road design, making it harder for drivers to see someone crossing.
Crosswalk use and traffic signals also influence safety. When marked crossings are missing or signals are unclear, both drivers and pedestrians may misjudge movement. Speed is another factor, as higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase the severity of impacts.
Distractions can affect both drivers and pedestrians. Phone use or inattention may delay reactions at critical moments. Road conditions, including weather or uneven surfaces, may also contribute by affecting braking distance or walking stability.
