Why Pedestrian Crashes on Highways Are Often Fatal
Highways are particularly dangerous for pedestrians because vehicles travel at high speeds, leaving little time for drivers to react. Even a brief presence in a lane can result in serious or fatal injuries.
Multi-vehicle impacts increase the risk, as initial collisions can leave a person in the path of additional vehicles. Roadway design, including limited shoulders and high-speed ramps, can further compromise safety for pedestrians.
Traffic signals, barriers, and pedestrian access points are designed to keep people off active lanes, highlighting the importance of avoiding high-speed areas whenever possible.
