Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Many involve a driver failing to yield at a crosswalk or intersection, distraction behind the wheel, or a pedestrian entering a roadway outside a marked crossing. Poor visibility and low light also play a role in many cases.
Does vehicle speed change the odds of survival?
Yes. Pedestrians struck at lower speeds are far more likely to survive and recover than those hit at higher speeds, since the force of impact increases sharply as speed rises.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur in urban areas, often near intersections, parking lots, or commercial corridors where foot traffic and vehicle traffic mix, similar to the setting near a grocery store.
Are these crashes more common after dark?
Nighttime and low-light hours see a higher share of pedestrian crashes than daylight hours, largely because drivers have less time to spot someone in the roadway.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Baltimore, MD
If you're involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash, you should call 911 immediately so officers and medics can respond. If you're the pedestrian and able to do so, avoid moving until paramedics check you over, since some injuries, like internal bleeding or head trauma, aren't obvious right away. Get a full medical evaluation even if you feel okay at the scene.
Write down what you remember as soon as possible, including the time, the direction vehicles and pedestrians were traveling, and any traffic signals nearby. If there were witnesses, ask for their contact information before they leave. Request a copy of the police report once it's filed, and follow up with your doctor if symptoms like pain, dizziness, or swelling appear in the days after the crash.
