Why Pedestrian Crashes Are More Likely at Night
Pedestrian crashes often occur during evening hours when visibility is reduced for both drivers and people crossing the street. Headlights illuminate only a limited distance ahead, which can make it difficult for drivers to see someone in the roadway until they are close.
Street lighting, clothing color, and traffic speed all influence how easily a pedestrian can be seen. Dark clothing and poorly lit roads can make pedestrians harder to notice.
Roadways without marked crosswalks or pedestrian signals may also increase risk. In these areas, drivers may not expect someone to cross the road, especially along busy routes with steady traffic.
Improved lighting, clearly marked crossings, and driver awareness can help reduce the risk of pedestrian crashes, particularly during nighttime travel.
